What is Double Knit Yarn?

Double Knit Yarn (or DK)  simply means it is a double thickness yarn. Very often it is considered to be twice the thickness of sock yarn. In days gone by, knitters would use sock yarn, held in double, to make a thicker garment, which is where the name double knit wool comes from. In Australia 8 Ply wool is usually also referred to  as double knit yarn.

What is DK (Double Knit) Yarn?

DK, also called  Double Knit wool, is also commonly referred to as 8 Ply in Australia. In the US is it called worsted yarn. It usually has between 11-14 wraps per inch, which results in approximately 200-250 metres per 100 grams. The recommended knitting needle sizes for double knit yarn is 3.75 – 4.5 mm. Double knit yarn is wonderful for knitting most clothing items and is often considered one of the most versatile and 'all-rounder' yarns. It is especially good for people new to knitting & crochet.
