It is easier than mulberry silk to handle and also easier to spin. The resulting spun yarn is soft and are great for next-to-skin knitting and weaving projects.

It is naturally soft beige and is from silk worms fed on Oak and other leaves that are high in tannin. It has a very long staple.

The tannin in the leaves gives this silk its characteristic pale gold colour. The filaments of tussah silk are much thicker and stronger than standard fibres, and are oval instead of round. Because the initial threads aren’t as fine, its cloth has a coarser hand than regular silk, and often has a slightly slub-y effect.

It dyes beautifully and blends well with other fibres. Although it is considered easier to dye after it has been spun it into a yarn. This is because the silk tops can get compacted when they are dyed, and then become more difficult to spin. Tussah Silk is a luxury fibre and has a beautiful natural shine and it is very durable.

Read about spinning with Tussah silk here

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0941/7415/0941/files/The-Good-Yarn-Ashford-Fibre-Tussah-Silk-1.jpg?v=1760582501
